I didn't dive deeper into the reasons behind the prohibition, because that was just kind of a mere experiment to reduce crime, corruption, & other social problems, but that was almost a fail.
What stories lie behind the situation of prohibition are much more interesting. And there are hundreds of them. Speakeasies are one such idea behind, that brought lots of lives and businesses into change. You must check them out; or if possible visit those bars (still called speakeasy) maintained from those times, renewed with same western-inspired retro interiors.
